Tree Removal Across the River in Black Eagle, MT

Black Eagle is a community of about 950 people in Cascade County, Montana, 3.8 road miles and about 10 minutes from downtown Great Falls, near Giant Springs. Meriwether Lewis named the falls in 1805. The town grew up under the Boston and Montana smelter, begun in 1891, whose stack came down in September 1982; the post office made the name official in 1917.

The company-town blocks on the bluff carry green ash and American elm on the boulevards, Siberian elm and boxelder in the alleys, big plains cottonwoods on the river flats and blue spruce tight against the houses. The wind comes straight up the river, and the February 2020 windstorm laid limbs across yards on both banks.

What We Do in Black Eagle

Removal, stump grinding, trimming and clearing for the old smelter town and the river flats below the dam.

A roped-in climber sectioning a bare hardwood trunk against the sky, a cut piece swinging away on a rigging line

Tree Removal

Wind-thrown, snow-broken, dead or leaning trees taken down in sections and hauled off the same day, with boulevard and elm-wood rules sorted first. See the full details, including typical pricing →

A stump grinder wheel cutting into a stump in a lawn, wood chips flying

Stump Grinding

Stumps ground below grade so the lawn comes back. Old cottonwood and boxelder roots run wide here, so we check for sprinkler lines before we grind. See the full details, including typical pricing →

A climber roped into the trunk of a tall tree, cutting a limb inside the canopy

Tree Trimming

Deadwood, hazard limbs and snow-load thinning on boxelders and Siberian elms, plus sidewalk and street clearance. We do not top trees. See the full details, including typical pricing →

A mini excavator pulling stumps and brush on a partly cleared wooded lot

Land Clearing

Shelterbelt rows, benchland juniper, river-bottom brush and acreage lots cleared, with burn permits and chip-or-haul decided up front. See the full details, including typical pricing →

Why a Great Falls Crew Comes to Black Eagle

What Black Eagle Can Expect

Ten Minutes Over the Bridge

The first place we reach from the shop. A cottonwood limb on a roof is usually looked at the same morning, and Tessa can fit a routine estimate into almost any day.

Elms and Ash on Company-Town Blocks

The elms and ash planted with the smelter houses now tower over roofs and service drops. We lower every piece on a rope, and dead elm leaves debarked or chipped.

Wind Up the River

Nothing slows a chinook between the falls and the bluff. Before spring we look for cracked leaders, hanging wood and lifted root plates, and say plainly what should come down.

County Ground, No Permit for Your Tree

Black Eagle is unincorporated, so a tree on your lot is your decision and no boulevard application applies. A brush pile needs a Cascade County burn permit, or we chip and haul.

City boulevard, burning and town-office rules: see our permits page.
