Fort Benton, MT: Trees in the Old River Port

Fort Benton is the Chouteau County seat, a city of about 1,450 people 42.2 road miles and about 54 minutes northeast of Great Falls by US-87, on the west bank of the Missouri at about 2,650 feet, the lowest ground we work. Established in 1846, it is the oldest continuously occupied settlement in Montana, named on Christmas Day 1850 for Senator Thomas Hart Benton.

As the most upstream port on the Mississippi river system, it drew the steamboats that carried miners and freight into the territory. The waterfront became a National Historic Landmark in 1961, and Shep the dog waits by the depot in bronze. The levee blocks carry big elms and ash over roofs, cottonwoods along the river walk and boxelder in the alleys.

A roped-in climber sectioning a bare hardwood trunk against the sky, a cut piece swinging away on a rigging line

Why a Great Falls Crew Comes to Fort Benton

What Fort Benton Can Expect

Fifty-Four Minutes Up US-87

The far end of our Chouteau County run through Carter, with no trip charge. Estimates here group with Carter and Highwood work.

Old Elms on the Levee Blocks

The elms planted with the historic blocks are big now, and Dutch elm disease is working through the region. We take a dead elm from the bucket while the wood holds, then debark or chip it.

River Cottonwoods on the Low Ground

The Missouri cottonwoods are the tallest trees in town and lean toward the water. We lower them in sections from the dry side, with the chip truck on the street.

A City With Its Own Code

Fort Benton writes its own ordinances, apart from Great Falls and Chouteau County. A tree wholly on your lot is your call; for one over a city street, we check with the city office first.

City boulevard, burning and town-office rules: see our permits page.
