Fairfield, MT: Tree Work in Barley Country

Fairfield is a town of about 760 people in Teton County, Montana, 36.7 road miles and about 43 minutes northwest of Great Falls on US-89. It began as a Milwaukee Railroad station, had three dams and canals by 1920 and Gibson Dam in 1929, and the Greenfields Irrigation District now waters about 83,000 acres, hence the Malting Barley Capital of the World.

Fairfield also holds a record that explains broken trees: on December 14, 1924, the temperature fell from 63 degrees at noon to 21 below at midnight, the largest twelve-hour drop ever measured in the country. That chinook whiplash splits bark and kills limbs on the ash, Siberian elm, spruce and caragana around town.

What We Do in Fairfield

The full Electric City Tree Co. lineup for the barley town and the irrigated farms of the Greenfields district.

A roped-in climber sectioning a bare hardwood trunk against the sky, a cut piece swinging away on a rigging line

Tree Removal

Wind-thrown, snow-broken, dead or leaning trees taken down in sections and hauled off the same day, with boulevard and elm-wood rules sorted first. See the full details, including typical pricing →

A stump grinder wheel cutting into a stump in a lawn, wood chips flying

Stump Grinding

Stumps ground below grade so the lawn comes back. Old cottonwood and boxelder roots run wide here, so we check for sprinkler lines before we grind. See the full details, including typical pricing →

Why a Great Falls Crew Comes to Fairfield

What Fairfield Can Expect

Forty-Three Minutes Out US-89

The northwest end of our list, with no trip charge. Fairfield estimates ride with Dutton and Simms work.

Chinook Whiplash on Bark and Limbs

Sixty-degree swings in a day split bark on the sunny side of ash and elms. We look for frost cracks and dead leaders before storm season and clear hazard limbs over the house.

Ditch Banks and Shelterbelts

Willow, cottonwood and elm along the Greenfields canals and the barley-field rows lean and thin with age. Ramon keeps machines off the ditch bank and chips the brush on site.

A Town With Its Own Office

Fairfield is incorporated with its own ordinances, so a tree over a town street starts with the town office, and we pass on what they say. Teton County handles burn permits.

City boulevard, burning and town-office rules: see our permits page.
