Monarch, MT: Tree Work in Belt Creek Canyon

Monarch is a hamlet of about 25 people in Cascade County, Montana, 44.8 road miles and about 60 minutes southeast of Great Falls on US-89, inside the Lewis and Clark National Forest at about 4,600 feet. Claims called King, Czar and Emperor date it to the first Little Belt mining days, and the Montana Central Railway ran up the canyon from 1889 until November 1945.

Sluice Boxes State Park lies just downstream, where the last eight miles of the canyon wind out between cliffs and the old rail grade. This is forest work: ponderosa, spruce and aspen on cabin lots, beetle-killed pine to drop before fire season, and defensible space around every place.

Beetle-killed and drought-stressed pine around Monarch cabins is fuel waiting for August. We drop the dead trees, open space around the buildings, and leave nothing to burn.

Steep Lots, Tight Rigging

Canyon cabin lots are steep and close to the creek and the road. Every tree comes down in sections, equipment stays on the drive, and no trunk falls toward Belt Creek.

Forest Ground, County Burn Permits

Monarch is unincorporated, so your own tree is your call. Burning needs a Cascade County permit, and forest fire restrictions can close it for months, which is why we chip and haul.
